Chapter 5: Thursday

Early Thursday morning, Big Hughes called his son.

“Junior,” Big Hughes started right in. He never said “hello” or “how are you” on the phone. He didn’t like talking on it. “Are you courting that Murphy girl?”

“Well, I had dinner with her.” William was surprised the inquisition had come so soon. “She gave me some chocolate cake. Want me to bring you a slice?” William said shuffling down the stairs of his two-story mission-style home.

“No. You eat it. That tall, skinny woman said you weren’t in bible study last night because you were off courting.”

“Courting?” William laughed. “Is that what she said, Pop?”

“No. That’s what I’m saying. She hinted around that you and that girl weren’t at bible study and made it seem like you two were hanky panky-ing around.”

“Who did she tell that to?” William’s steps were slowing.

“The whole church, boy!” the older Hughes shouted.

“What?!” William’s calm and patient demeanor changed in a flash. “I don’t care what she says about me, but I don’t want her talking about Iris like that. She has no right to say things like that over the congregation. Who is she anyway? Where did she even come from? How did she even get the microphone?”

“Son, those are the same questions Clem asked. He was mad as a wet hen.”

“Clem was mad?” he chuckled. Clem was a sight to see when he got going. He’d turn red, and his straight tendrils always seemed to flop right over his forehead.

“Clem was hot as a six-shooter! I think he wanted to snatch a knot in her after bible study.”

“Why was he so mad?”

“Because she said you were the most handsome deacon in the church,” and Big Hughes roared in laughter. William laughed too. Both Hughes men laughed on the phone, but when the laughter subsided, William was the one hot as a six-shooter.

“Boy, you know people in a small town talk. The only thing about this is she ain’t from here, so it hits the ear wrong. I don’t want you to do anything shameful, but I wanted you to know.” Big Hughes was sitting in a his recliner rubbing his coal-black hair and shaking his head.

“Well, I knew folk would talk, but I didn’t expect her. I wonder what got into her to make her do that? She has never said two words to me before, and I have never seen her and Iris talk either. That was a lowdown thing to do, Pop.”

“What looks crazy to us makes perfect sense to women, son.”

“Well, I been trying to talk to Iris for three months, and she’s finally warmed up to me and now this. If this little stunt runs Iris back into her shell, God so help me, that Jackie woman will regret the day she landed here.” He ranted. “She’s gonna keep Iris’ name out of her mouth when I’m done.” William stood fuming at his kitchen sink waiting for his coffee to brew while his father leaned back in his chair bearing the smile of proud father.
